Analysis of Corrosion Problems in Decorative Stainless Steel

Aug 27,2025
To explain the corrosion problem of decorative stainless steel, it is first necessary to clarify that the corrosion resistance of stainless steel is not absolute, but relative and conditional. So far, there is no steel grade that does not corrode in any environment, both domestically and internationally. Similarly, stainless steel cannot be used in any environment for decoration, which may lead to rusting.
As decorative stainless steel, there are Cr13 type, Cr17 type, 18-8 type, and 18-14-2 type. Different types of stainless steel have different corrosion resistance abilities, and their usage environments are also different. C13 and Cr17 are used in rural areas with low air pollution; Type 18-8 can be used in cities with severe air pollution and humidity; The 18-14-2 type is a material that is resistant to marine atmospheric corrosion. Stainless steel used for decoration should be selected according to the corresponding model based on environmental conditions.

Will a stainless steel mid pipe rust ?

Stainless steel, as a decorative item, has a good working environment, but it cannot be guaranteed that it will never rust. There are three reasons for rust:
1. Defects of stainless steel: heavy skin, inclusions, sand holes, etc. Impurities inside these defects can seep into the surface of stainless steel through water oxidation reactions, forming rust spots;
2. Stainless steel surfaces will also form rust spots when in contact with liquids containing rust;
3. Stainless steel surfaces will corrode when exposed to gases or solutions containing SO2, H2S, NO2, CO2, and CL+.
The corrosion of decorative stainless steel is not only related to its own defects, but also to the environment it is in, such as humidity, temperature, flow velocity, flow direction, composition and quantity of impurities in the air.
The rust resistance of decorative stainless steel is related to both its composition and surface condition. If the smoothness is low and the surface is rough with high adsorption force, the corrosion resistance is low; If the smoothness is too high and the surface is smooth with low adhesion, then the corrosion resistance is high. So when making decorative stainless steel, it is necessary to have a smooth surface to prevent rusting in a short period of time.

How to remove rust from stainless steel pipe ?

The long-term existence of rust spots not only affects the appearance, but also reduces the service life of stainless steel due to surface corrosion. Therefore, if rust spots appear on the surface of decorative stainless steel, they should be treated in a timely manner. Two points should be noted when dealing with rust stains:
1. Try not to damage the original surface of stainless steel as much as possible. If the surface is damaged, grind it smooth;
2. When processing, choose to do it when the weather is relatively clear and the air is relatively dry.
The reason why stainless steel is resistant to corrosion is that it has a dense layer of Cr203 on its surface, which must be in contact with oxygen to form. When the air humidity is high, condensed water will form on the surface of stainless steel, which isolates it from oxygen in the air. The Cr203 layer damaged by rust removal cannot be repaired in a timely manner, and impurities in the water continue to react chemically or electrochemically with the stainless steel, resulting in new rust spots quickly appearing on the rusted iron parts. This is why it is required to choose a sunny and dry weather to remove rust spots.
Decorative stainless steel can maintain its brightness and rust resistance for a long time as it is used and maintained properly.
