Welded Pipe Manufacturing Process, Types, and Uses
Welded pipe is manufactured by forming steel strip or steel plate into a tubular shape and welding the seam along the pipe's longitudinal direction. Due to its high production efficiency and cost advantages, welded pipe is one of the most widely used steel pipes worldwide.
Welded Carbon Pipe Manufacturing Process
High-Frequency Welded Pipe (ERW)
● Steel strip is continuously formed into a round shape
● High-frequency current heats the strip edges
● Pressure welding completes the joint without filler metal
This process offers high speed, stable quality, and low production cost, making ERW welded pipe ideal for mass production.
Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded Pipe (LSAW)
● Steel plate is formed using JCOE or UOE process
● Internal and external submerged arc welding
● Mechanical expansion improves dimensional accuracy
LSAW welded pipe is suitable for large-diameter and thick-wall pipelines with higher strength requirements.
Advantages and Limitations of Welded Steel Pipe
Advantages
High manufacturing efficiency
Lower cost compared with seamless pipe
Uniform wall thickness and good surface finish
Flexible production of different pipe diameters
Limitations
Presence of a longitudinal weld seam
Welding quality must be strictly controlled
Diameter limited by steel plate width
